Reading with Phonics:Phonics in context-Early Readers( Prim-Ed)
Reading with Phonics is a set of 3 books which are designed to develop pupils’ phonemic awareness through a text with related worksheets. This allows the pupils to practice the sound being taught while reading and comprehending the text. Each sound has 2 stories based around the same theme, which allows for differentiation for the pupil. The word cards at the end of help the pupils to consolidate their knowledge of the sounds.
The books are designed for Early readers as in Junior Infants to 2nd Class. These could also be used very well in the Support area.
Relevance to curriculum aims: 5/5
They are totally relevant to the Irish curriculum as they focus in on the competence and confidence in using language and receptiveness to language strand units. They are excellent for sight words, letter-sound relationships and even spelling strategies.
Teacher useability: 5/5
Simple and easy to use, they are also available in digital format. The worksheets can be copied and laminated if you wanted to use them again. The great thing about these activities is they help the child reinforce the sound they are focusing on. The books do this by varying the activities each time. Differentiation is used well here as the activities are at a range of levels.
Value for money: 4/5
Even though this is a great product, there is nothing new about this. Prim-ed have countless books of this nature and your school probably has loads too! However, if you need new content and activities, then these books will be useful. They retail at €24.95( online price)each.
Extras: No extras but you don’t really need them, do you?
