Scratch Maths: Place Value Cards

Scratch is a really easy programming language that allows children to learn the basics of coding without any need to type a line of jargon. I’ve made a series of videos in Scratch on the Anseo YouTube Channel and have my own Scratch profile, where I store all my scripts. One key tool in the classroom today is Place Value Cards, which can be used to demonstrate the value of any three-digit number. For example, the number 123, contains 100, 20 and 3. By clicking and dragging number blocks around the screen, one can visually see this. You can make your own Place Value Cards or these ones from Primary Resources are very good.

Click on the screenshot above to start playing the resource. It’s recommended to use this in full screen mode so you can see it properly. The idea is simple. Drag and drop the Place Value cards into the grey box and create numbers.

For those interested in the Scratch end of things, I created 27 sprites (1 to 9, 10 to 90 and 100 to 900) and the Stage was coloured in blue and grey. When any sprite touches blue, it goes to the smaller size. When it touches grey, it grows bigger.
