Scoilnet have come up with an amazing set of resources for schools. Scoilnet maps is a set of 6 mapping tools that could have revolutionary effects on the Irish primary classroom.
While Google Maps is a fantastic resource, Scoilnet have acquired the rights to show official Ordinance Survey Maps for Ireland. You can zoom in on any part of the country and show official data of the country. Even more impressively there are a number of different views you can have. Using the layers, you can show all the schools in an area, any monuments, etc. It was fantastic to be able to zoom directly into my own school and the area around it! You can also choose the type of map you like, including Aerial Maps and Historical Maps. I also loved the feature, which allowed you to draw between two points on the map and it calculated the distance.
Scoilnet also offer access to World Maps in super detail. Other cool mapping tools offered by Scoilnet Maps are an analysis of the 7 billion people living in the world with interesting data displayed beautifully. There’s also some lovely stuff about the Titanic, Olympics and Carbon Dioxide.
I think this is easily one of the best resources ever produced by Scoilnet and it is immediately useful in the classroom. Geography has never been more important thanks to social mapping and Scoilnet have made a wonderful addition to any classroom.
