If you’ve work in a primary school for over a decade, and you were asked what was the number one change in pupils since you began your career, it wouldn’t be a surprise if children’s mental health was top of the list. However, accessing services for mental health is almost impossible, leading to a deterioration of behaviours and putting the health, safety and well-being of all children at risk.
Put simply, if a child requires intervention, schools should have fast access to a counsellor and/or psychologist and/or psychiatrist where necessary. Right now, this just isn’t happening, and it needs to be prioritised. As for CAMHS, it needs huge investment as it cannot manage its current caseload.
