Are Gen Alpha simply overstimulated iPad kids?

It seems that we have christened our next generation of kids, Generation Alpha. I did wonder where we’d go after “millennials” and I guess it makes sense to start at alpha given we messed up in the 20th century starting with generation X!  According to a Business Insider article, this generation of children is being raised by their millennial parents to be highly emotionally intelligent.

According to the article, it is evident in the way these children are able to express and manage their emotions, as well as in their creative problem-solving skills. It seems that Millennial parents have been investing time and energy in raising emotionally intelligent kids, and this effort is paying off in the form of Generation Alpha children. This is the newest generation of kids, and they are proving to be highly emotionally intelligent. I wonder if the parents realised that that was what they were doing!

The article then goes on to explain to us how we should deal with these Gen Alpha children.

Apparently, we need to create an environment that fosters their emotional intelligence, and ensure that we are teaching them to enable them to succeed.

The teacher who was speaking about this generation is a TikTok influencer – you wouldn’t have guessed that, right?

Apart from feeling much older than I did before reading this article and cringing when I read the response of one of her followers:

This is the first time I’ve seen a teacher talk about the positives in gen alpha and I’m legit crying. Thank you.

I guess it’s my job to remember that I was once the generation that the previous generation didn’t understand. In fact, I was.

I’m sure there’s a hell of a lot more to it than emotional intelligence and I’m interested in hearing what other ways this new generation of children need to have fostered in them. I’ll admit I do see a lot more understanding and acceptance of difference in this generation. I’d be interested in your thoughts.
