The Anseo.net Newsletter features my thoughts on the Irish Primary Education System.

A post I made on X got me a radio interview on Cork’s 96FM, where I spoke about multi-denominational education with PJ Coogan. It made a nice change to talk about something I feel passionate about on the radio. Even so, I did enjoy sparring with Pat Kenny about career breaks. Hopefully one day, I’ll get to talk to him about patronage in schools.

The last two weeks have been a whirlwind in terms of attitudes to the role of religion in primary schools. It started with the aftermath of the INTO Congress with a show dedicated to the subject.

Days later we had the first functioning Catholic school divest over to Educate Together – 13 years after the divestment scheme started!

Despite being told Catholic religion in schools is being replaced by queer theory and gender ideology by some commentators, Seán Henry published his book, “Queer Thriving in Catholic Education” which put a spanner in that theory.

Alexander O’Hara, however, believes that many parents still value a Catholic education, but too few teachers are willing to provide it.

From religion to ratatouille, more schools join the hot meals scheme, in welcome news.

We’re also expecting the number of children in primary schools drop by 100,000 pupils in the next number of years.

But spare a thought for teachers in one UK school who are offering their students 11-hour school days. Sometimes it’s nice to remind ourselves in Ireland that things could always be worse!
