Its such an important question Simon but I think it goes beyond teacher training. Much of the important work done in Special Ed happens because of connection & relationships. Relationships with the child but also with the parents, caregivers, nannies & Grandads, siblings. All of those involved in the childs life. You can’t teach that!! You can model it and mentor it when the teacher is in-situ and hope to God that you have recruited the right person ( sometimes you have not!) and a lot of that responsibility falls on the Principal. I absolutely agree that more training needs to be done at an academic level around types of disability, interrogating clinical reports etc but it would be so important for that training to be backed up with a solid block of time in a Special setting. You have to see it to be it.
