I think the question goes beyond SET. Why don’t we spend more time exploring the different designations of need across schools in general and have extended opportunities to experience these settings before we qualify? Once we are in post, there should also be opportunities to collaborate with neighbouring special schools and share knowledge and practice.
Observation and practical, hands-on experience alongside colleagues are vital. And, as Debbie said, acknowledgment of the importance of relationships, safety, and connection must come first. When relational safety is established, the rest will follow.
