I know some colleges are now embedding SET experience into placement which I think is a brilliant start. I fully agree that training for SET should be part of ITE. Unfortunately, some fellow teachers can view SET as ‘a handy role’ or ‘a wind down’. It is extremely disheartening. I am a SET, with a post grad in special and inclusive education and a huge passion for all things AEN.
I also fully agree with both @neuroaffirmative_teacher and @themildprincipal relationships really are the heart of SET and they are a brilliant start! You are often dealing with children who have low self esteem, anxiety and reluctant school attendance. The more you can make that child feel safe and heard the better!!
Equally, however, I really believe that SET is a specialist area. I have a huge interest and experience in most areas of SET and I feel confident that I can support all children. This has taken years of study and further training on my own time. It is very difficult to expect a teacher who has no experience in SET to deliver the same support.
