Every so often, some politician makes the suggestion that classrooms should be utilised for after school care. The problem with this idea is that teachers tend not to leave their classrooms after school finishes and they have to get their rooms ready for the following day before they leave. Anyway, it makes a good soundbite and it’s a great distraction for the failure of the government to provide decent pre and after school care.
In short, the government needs to create centres for pre and after school care. In bigger schools, this could be on site and in smaller schools, it could be either on one school’s site and a bus would pick up children from the other schools in the area, or it could be in an independent site where a bus would drive children from their school.
