084. Ensure every town has adequate and fully funded provision for swimming

Schools have to provide aquatics as part of the PE curriculum. However, the reality In Ireland is that schools outsource swimming lessons to local swimming pools and children are taught by the swimming pool instructors. This costs a significant amount of money, especially when buses have to be used, which has to be paid for by families. This model should be replaced with a fully-government funded aquatics scheme. Swimming Pools would be paid directly by the DES to provide lessons to pupils for a set fee per pupil for a set number of sessions per year. Transport should also be supplied by the government. Every urban centre should have a swimming pool and there should be enough swimming pools to cater for the needs of every school. Lessons need to be consistent and standardised and instructors need to be able to complete a specific course for teaching all primary school children from infants upwards.
